Headless commerce on Shopify, built with Hydrogen and modern frontend frameworks

We build headless storefronts on Shopify and Shopify Plus using Hydrogen and other modern frontend frameworks — for brands whose experience, content, or performance requirements have outgrown a themed build. Founded in India, serving brands globally with teams in the USA and Australia.

Discuss A Headless Project

Headless is a deliberate architecture choice — we help you decide if it's the right one

Vyom Co. builds headless commerce on Shopify's Storefront API using Hydrogen and other modern frontend frameworks. We recommend headless when your requirements genuinely exceed what a theme can deliver, and we say so plainly when a well-built theme would serve you better and cost less to maintain.

Frontend freedom, backed by Shopify's commerce engine

Separating frontend from backend means the customer experience is built entirely in a modern JavaScript framework, calling Shopify only for commerce data — products, inventory, checkout, and orders — while the storefront itself is free of theme architecture constraints.

That freedom comes with more engineering responsibility: caching, rendering strategy, API integration, and hosting all move onto your development team. We plan for that overhead honestly during discovery rather than glossing over it to win the project.

When Headless Makes Sense

A trade-off, not an automatic upgrade

Headless earns its complexity when experience requirements — highly custom interactions, non-standard content models, or integration with a separate content platform — genuinely exceed what theme architecture supports. If a bespoke theme can meet the brief, we say so, since headless without a real reason adds cost and maintenance for no proportional benefit.

Hydrogen & Frontend Frameworks

Shopify's own framework, or the right alternative

We build on Shopify's Hydrogen framework — paired with Oxygen hosting — when it fits the project, and on other modern frontend frameworks like Next.js when a client's requirements, existing stack, or hosting preferences point elsewhere. The framework serves your project's needs rather than the other way round.

Performance & Core Web Vitals

Speed engineered in, not assumed

Headless can hit Core Web Vitals targets that are difficult to reach with a heavily app-laden theme, through server-side rendering, careful caching, and lean bundle sizes. That performance comes from disciplined engineering, not the architecture choice on its own — a poorly built headless site can underperform a well-built theme.

Content & Composable Architecture

Editorial content on its own platform

Headless architecture lets editorial content and marketing pages live in a dedicated CMS purpose-built for content teams, while product and commerce data stays in Shopify. This composable approach suits brands with heavy content programmes that the Shopify admin was never designed to support well.

Apps & Integrations

Rebuilding what apps used to do in the theme

Backend-only apps still work through the Admin API regardless of frontend architecture, but apps that inject theme-based UI need custom rebuilding into the headless frontend. We audit your app stack during discovery and scope this work explicitly — see our integration services for how we approach connecting Shopify to the rest of your systems.

After Launch

Maintaining a more complex architecture

Headless stores carry more engineering surface area than themes — framework updates, API version changes, and hosting infrastructure all need active attention. Our support & maintenance retainers keep that surface area healthy, and CRO work makes sure the extra flexibility is actually converting into results.

FAQs

Headless Shopify

Headless separates the frontend — what customers see and interact with — from Shopify's backend commerce engine. Instead of a Liquid theme rendering pages, a separate application built with a framework like React or Remix calls Shopify's Storefront API for data, giving the frontend far more architectural freedom than a themed build allows.

Headless makes sense when your experience requirements genuinely exceed what a theme architecture supports — highly custom interactions, non-standard content models, tight integration with a separate content platform, or performance requirements a themed build cannot hit at your traffic scale. It is a deliberate trade-off, not an automatic upgrade over a well-built theme.

Hydrogen is Shopify's own React-based framework for building headless storefronts, paired with Oxygen hosting for deployment tightly integrated with Shopify's infrastructure. We build on Hydrogen when it fits the project, and on other modern frontend frameworks when a client's requirements or existing stack point elsewhere — the framework serves the project, not the reverse.

If your requirements are well served by a bespoke or template theme, headless usually adds cost, complexity, and maintenance overhead without a proportional benefit. You lose access to the App Store's theme-integrated ecosystem and take on more engineering responsibility for things Shopify would otherwise handle. We recommend headless only when the trade-off is genuinely worth it.

It can — a well-built headless frontend with server-side rendering and careful caching often hits Core Web Vitals targets that are harder to reach with a heavily app-laden theme. But headless does not guarantee speed automatically; a poorly optimised headless build can be slower than a lean, well-built theme. Performance comes from engineering discipline, not the architecture choice alone.

Backend-only apps generally still work fine since they operate on order, inventory, and customer data through the Admin API regardless of frontend architecture. Apps that inject frontend UI via theme app extensions typically do not — those features need custom rebuilding into the headless frontend, which we scope and account for during discovery rather than discovering mid-build.

Yes — this is one of headless's strongest use cases. Editorial content, landing pages, and marketing sections can live in a dedicated content platform while product and commerce data stays in Shopify, giving content teams a purpose-built editing experience the Shopify admin was never designed for.

Longer than an equivalent themed build in most cases — expect several months from discovery through architecture, frontend development, API integration, and QA, depending on scope and how much custom functionality is involved. We phase delivery with visible milestones rather than a single big-bang launch at the end.

Headless stores carry more engineering surface area than themes — frontend framework updates, API version changes, and hosting infrastructure all need active maintenance. Our support & maintenance retainers and development team stay engaged post-launch so the extra architectural flexibility does not turn into technical debt.
